i hope this finds you well
by Casey Dawson

it’s true—i’ve been absentee.
less working more eating
my own shit than groceries all
the raisins my fingertips have
become look sweeter by the second
wash of my face the fiftieth drink
of water the weeks of breath
spent online the constant prayer
that i might remain
resilient beloved kind
while under your knife to bleed
but to bleed just right.

reader it’s true—i fear that
this is the one my body
won’t survive one final beating
of this dead horse heart but here
i am rinsed and repeated scammed into
another afternoon of self care
and personal essays about how once
here a girl grew old. you might
remember her fondly the slope of her
spine her dimpled grin how her love
may have changed the course
of this cover letter.
